January 5, 2010

The left-most photo is the resident Fresh Pond Reservation Eastern Screech Owl, red morph (there have been red and gray ones over the last four plus years), about to leave the nest for a night of hunting (early bird special?). The second photo is of the same owl in flight, travelling to the right of the nest and up the hill (if your back is to the fence at Post 500). The ESO, in flight, is near the middle and top third of the picture, and resembles an upside-down U.

The Great Blue Heron stands on the ice in the eastern corner of the big pond. There’s a mystery duck in the south section of the big pond. Meanwhile crows seem to have found something to eat on the ice.

Another day with snow on the ground, dense clouds in the sky and a tendency for everything to be black and white.

The big news today is new snow and sledding–which always brings out a big crowd on a Saturday. There were miscellaneous flakes falling at points around the pond.

January 1, 2010, Friday

First day of the new year, where writing the date feels almost like the future. Cynthia takes a walk all the way around Fresh Pond, but decides not to wait for the owl to fly. Owl picture were not particulary good. There are neighbors walking around the pond today, along with a large number of new visitors. There were many New Year’s Resolutions made over the last few days. For Cambridge residents one of those is to walk regularly around Fresh Pond. There are many wishes for a happy new year. Those many people are often accompanied by dogs.
